After the cretaceous era approximately sixty-five million years ago the earth's climate cooled, and because of glaciations the sea level fell about 650 feet. About 11, 500 years ago there was a return to a warmer climate, ice melted and ocean levels rose by about three hundred feet.
Scientists from several multinational groups have produced data that reveals that climatic global warming after the last great ice age 11,500 years ago occurred much faster than previously thought. Earth's climate shifted from cold to warm in less than five years. Data compiled on several other similar rapid warming events occurring in the last forty thousand years corroborates these findings.
Because of its implications in regard to our current global warming event, the initial disturbing data suggested that the three-hundred-foot rise in sea level happened extremely rapidly, as much as six to fifteen feet a year! Even more disturbing is more recent data suggesting the sea level rose even faster!
Computer models studying our current warming from greenhouse gases suggest a similar extremely rapid rise in ocean levels is possible. Such an event—called a Dansgaard-Oeschger event—predicts an initial rise in ocean levels of several inches in the first year, followed by subsequent annual sea level rises between six and fifteen feet year after year for twenty to fifty years!
If this happens, look for expensive coastal real estate values to plummet in the first year. The next year will be chaos as billions of people try to relocate from urban coastal cities. As coastal transportation hubs and energy refineries are submerged, it will be impossible to supply food to everyone. All civilization could completely break down. Global famine will then begin in earnest.
The only survivors will be isolated pockets of self-sufficient individuals who can produce their own food and other necessities.

No one knows for certain exactly what is going to happen.
